The Word of Life Christian Academy Middle School is fully accredited and aligns with national instructional standards, equipping students with academic skills needed for their future success. We are very excited about our stronger instructional program! Click here to review our 2012-2013 course list.
With our talented and highly qualified instructional staff teaching to their strengths, our stronger curriculum and enrichment, combined with our small class sizes, your child will have the opportunity for a robust and individualized instructional experience. Our small class sizes will maximize the opportunity for excelling and individual instruction, reduce distractions, allow for more student-teacher interaction, and provide your student with more student development and presentation opportunities.
Our Academy Middle School Academic Skills List serves as a valuable resource for our program's content.
Foreign Language (Spanish) for High School Credit: Spanish will be offered for high school credit for 7th and 8th graders who qualify for the program.
Latin I and Word Origins: Latin is an excellent foundation for a host of foreign languages, strengthens English skills, and provides many additional academic benefits. We are providing Greek and Latin origins as well as Latin 1. We are also providing a Word/Latin Club that will complement our language program.
Foreign Language Experience ("FLEX") Program: We have established an innovative Foreign Language Experience ("FLEX") Program that will expose Word of Life students to a number of foreign languages. This exposure will include language structures, vocabulary, greetings, music, and cultures. Our affiliation with an international church has provided a unique ability for authentic exposure to various world languages and cultures.
World Languages Foundations: In addition to valuable language instruction through our unique "World Languages Foundations" class, our students will learn some important considerations for communicating with people from the various cultures. We believe that this program will not only prepare our students for their more advanced high school foreign language courses, but that it will also prepare them to create a common bond for relating cross-culturally in life and ministry. We believe that this WOLCA middle school program will become a model for others to follow.
Instructional Standards: We base our strong instructional program and curriculum on national and state standards. We also draw upon the Terra Nova Performance standards and assessment tools provided through the Association of Christian Schools International as well as our specific Academic Skills List. This list reflects national standards, including Educational Progress and the Standards for the English Language Arts developed by the International Reading Association and the National Association for the Teaching of Mathematics, the Virginia state (and Presidential) Physical Fitness standards, and national and state science standards. These tested standards will continue to guide the Academy's curriculum and instructional assessments.
Fine Arts Development: We have expanded our fine arts program with weekly art and music classes with highly qualified instructors, a band and art and drama clubs. We participate in the outstanding Odyssey of the Mind program and also provide exceptional drama experiences through class skits at our weekly chapel services. We are further expanding the development of our drama program with a full scale dramatic production during 2012-2013.
Athletic Development and Sports: Word of Life is committed to providing your child with the opportunity to develop his or her athletic skills and abilities. We have entered into an agreement with the RGM Athletic Program and are now able to provide an array of middle school sports programs, clinics and team sports including basketball, track, flag football, lacrosse, and volleyball depending on student interest. Please indicate your sports preference upon Enrolling. The sports program will continuing to expand to League involvement as enrollment increases.
Grade Updates and Homework Assignments Online: We are completing our transition to a state-of-the-art RenWeb parent communications system which will allow teachers to post daily homework assignments and update grades that will be accessible to you online on an ongoing basis.
After School Programs: We are excited about our Geography Club, Odyssey of the Mind (Drama and Problem Solving) Basketball, and Soccer and will be adding more after-school clubs next year, e.g., Math Club and Word/Scrabble Club.
